Breast Reconstruction Surgery: What to Expect

Published by DR. Bradley Ashpole

Being diagnosed with breast cancer is a devastating event that many women worldwide have to face on a daily basis. When women opt for a mastectomy, they may opt for a breast augmentation in Palatine, including breast reconstruction surgery. Depending on the individual, women may choose to endure breast reconstruction at the same time as a mastectomy, but the procedure can also be completed months or years after completed cancer treatments. Here are some other things to keep in mind if you have an upcoming breast reconstruction surgery.

Two Main Types of Reconstruction

There are two main types of reconstruction. The first is implants or prosthetics, and these consist of silicone or saline implants. This option does not impact other parts of the body; thus, the recovery is generally easier. Silicone or saline implants may be used during breast augmentation surgeries near Palatine as well.

Another option is skin flap surgery, a method in which tissues from other parts of the body are used. Our doctors may take fat from your abdominal or back area and apply it towards your new breasts. The healing time for this procedure is lengthier than opting for traditional implants.

The Recovery Period

Keep in mind that surgeries like breast augmentation near Palatine and breast reconstruction surgery are major procedures that require proper healing time. You likely won’t be able to participate in regular activities for up to two months. Fatigue, bruising and soreness are common, and movements such as lifting the arms over the head could be restricted.

Going through a mastectomy and breast augmentation surgery is incredibly difficult, but our caring, attentive staff will make the process as seamless as possible. If you have questions or want to schedule an appointment, get in touch with us today.
