Many people work at eating right and exercising for years, only to fall short of achieving a flat, toned stomach. Pregnancy, genetics, weight changes, and aging can all make it difficult to achieve your goals, no matter how committed you are. Fortunately, a tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, can bring you the well-toned abdomen you’ve been longing for. Best of all, results are long-lasting, and most patients report feeling more satisfied with their body image post-surgery. Led by Board-Certified Dr. Bradley Ashpole, Ashpole Plastic Surgery has over 15 years of experience helping men and women achieve their cosmetic goals through a combination of advanced technology and artistic precision. What Is a Tummy Tuck?
A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a type of cosmetic surgery that improves the shape and firmness of the stomach area. It’s typically best for people who have loose skin, excess fat, or weakened abdominal muscles—especially after pregnancy, weight loss, or aging. During the procedure, the plastic surgeon removes extra skin and fat from the abdomen. The muscles in the abdominal wall are tightened, and liposuction may be used to improve the overall shape and contour. The remaining skin is then repositioned to create a flatter, smoother appearance. While a tummy tuck is not a weight loss surgery, it can help you achieve a more toned midsection when diet and exercise aren’t enough. Many patients choose this procedure to feel more confident and comfortable in their bodies after major life changes.
The Mini Tummy Tuck
A mini tummy tuck is a less extensive version of a full tummy tuck, ideal for patients who have mild to moderate loose skin or fat limited to the lower abdomen (below the belly button). This option does not involve repositioning the navel and usually requires a shorter incision, resulting in less scarring and a quicker recovery. The mini tuck focuses on tightening the lower abdominal muscles and removing a small amount of skin and fat. It’s a popular choice for patients in good shape who are bothered by a stubborn “pooch” or excess skin that persists despite exercise.
Boost Your Confidence with a Flatter Stomach
A tummy tuck can improve your confidence and help you achieve a more positive body image. After a tummy tuck, most patients report feeling more comfortable wearing crop tops, swimsuits, and other revealing clothing. If you live in Arlington Heights, Barrington,
Schaumburg, Itasca, Libertyville, or any of the surrounding areas, Ashpole Plastic Surgery is here for you.
Are You a Candidate For a Tummy Tuck
If you have excess loose skin around your stomach, a tummy tuck is likely a good procedure for your needs. Many patients also choose to pursue a
Mommy Makeover, which includes a tummy tuck as well as other procedures like breast augmentation and body contouring. Good candidates for a tummy tuck are able to maintain their weight and are healthy enough for surgery. It’s also important to realize the possibilities and limitations of an abdominoplasty. Patients who already have healthy diet and exercise habits will find it easier to maintain their results post-surgery. If you’re not a candidate for a tummy tuck, we can recommend other effective
body procedures, like:
Tummy Tucks for Men
While tummy tucks are often associated with women, many men benefit from abdominoplasty, especially after major weight loss or age-related skin laxity. The procedure can help address loose abdominal skin, weakened muscles, and stubborn fat that doesn’t respond to diet or exercise. Men typically want to restore a firm, flat abdominal profile without feminizing the waist. A male tummy tuck is tailored to retain a natural, masculine silhouette. In some cases, liposuction is combined with the procedure to refine the flanks and enhance muscle visibility. As with any surgery, the best results come from a personalized approach based on your anatomy and goals.

Understanding the Tummy Tuck Surgery
Before scheduling a tummy tuck, we ask patients to come in for an initial consultation with our team. This appointment allows us to get to know you and your needs. It also gives us the chance to review your medical history and ensure you’re healthy enough for surgery. During the surgery itself, Dr. Ashpole will begin by making an incision between the hip bones. Then, he’ll remove excess fat tissue and loose skin in the abdominal area. Finally, he will tighten muscles in the abdominal area to create a tighter, more sculpted look. Then, he will suture the remaining skin and shape a new belly button. Depending on your needs, Dr. Ashpole may recommend a mini tummy tuck rather than a full tummy tuck. The mini is great at addressing lower abdominal issues, while the full tuck can address issues in multiple areas.
The Tummy Tuck Recovery Process
Recovering from a tummy tuck takes time, but most patients find the results are well worth it. Knowing what to expect can help you feel more prepared and comfortable throughout the healing process.
Right After Surgery
After your tummy tuck, you’ll wear a compression garment to help reduce swelling and support the healing tissues. Small drain tubes may be placed under the skin for a few days to prevent fluid buildup. It’s normal to feel tightness or discomfort in the first few days—your surgeon will prescribe pain medication to help you stay comfortable.
First 1–2 Weeks
During the first week or two:
- Avoid lifting anything heavy and get plenty of rest.
- Light walking is encouraged to help with blood flow and reduce the risk of blood clots.
- Many people take about two weeks off work, depending on how physical their job is.
- As swelling begins to go down, you’ll start feeling more mobile, but it’s important to continue avoiding intense physical activity, especially anything that involves your core.
Ongoing Healing
Swelling and tightness may last for a few months, but you’ll gradually notice a flatter, more toned appearance as your body heals. Most patients see their final results within 3 to 6 months. To support a smooth recovery:
- Wear your compression garment as directed
- Stay hydrated and eat healthy foods
- Follow your surgeon’s aftercare instructions closely
Be sure to attend all follow-up appointments so your surgeon can monitor your healing and ensure the best outcome.
