Tummy Tuck Preparation & Recovery

Published by DR. Bradley Ashpole

If you’re in the market for a tummy tuck in Arlington Heights, Ashpole Plastic Surgery has board-certified plastic surgeons that are excited to get you the results you deserve. The process of getting an abdominoplasty, or commonly referred to as a tummy tuck, can be a daunting and intimidating process, but we will patiently and happily walk you through every step of the way.

Preparation

Pre-op consultations usually include the discussion of your medication and supplement regimen as well as your medical history. These things help us assess your risk of developing potentially dangerous blood clots and/or excessive bleeding. Tobacco users are expected to refrain from intake of all kinds for at least three months prior to surgery and to abstain during recovery as well. Of course, it as this time that we will discuss your ideal body weight post-surgery and your desired results.

There are three classifications of the type of tummy tuck procedure: mini, standard and extensive.

Mini Tummy Tuck

Mini focuses on the area below the navel and results usually tighten the abdominal wall and remove excess fat and tissue.

Standard Tummy Tuck

A standard tummy tuck has similarities to a mini tummy tuck, but it may include treatment above the navel. It usually involves liposuction and other additional treatment to the love handles.

Extended Tummy Tuck

This tummy tuck is similar to a standard tummy tuck, but it is called “extended” in referral to the incision length. It’s ideal for those with significant loose skin on the sides and lower back.

Recovery

The amount of recovery time is dependent on the type of surgery received. For a mini tummy tuck, expect recovery to take about a week of minimized physical activity before resuming more intensive activity. Standard and extended tummy tucks can require weeks of minimized activity post-surgery.

But don’t take “minimized activity” too literally. Getting up and walking around to complete day-to-day activities will help reduce your risk of developing blood clots. Be sure to not put any strain on your incisions.
