What Is a Facelift?
As people grow older, the skin of the face begins to wrinkle and sag, and can lead to heaviness along the jawline and laxity of the neck. Exposure to the sun, genetic influences and other factors can contribute to the effects of aging.
A facelift, also referred to as a rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that improves visible signs of aging in the face and neck. A facelift can correct these conditions and give people a more youthful appearance. This procedure involves the tightening of facial and neck skin and muscles, as well as the removal of excess skin.
Specifically, facelifts are ideal for addressing the following issues:
- Sagging in the middle of your face
- Deep creases below the lower eyelids
- Deep creases along the nose extending to the corner of the mouth
- Fat that has fallen or has disappeared
- Loss of skin tone in the lower face that creates jowls
- Loose skin and excess fatty deposits under the chin and jaw can give even a person of normal weight the appearance of a double chin
The loss of youthful contours in the face can be due to a variety of factors, including heredity, gravity, environmental conditions, and stress. Rejuvenation procedures are typically performed in conjunction with a facelift and brow lift to correct a sagging or deeply furrowed brow, or eyelid surgery to rejuvenate aging eyes. We most often utilize techniques which involve the suspension of lining tissues of the skin rather than the skin itself to prevent a “stretched” appearance. Facelift incisions are placed in areas where they are minimally visible. A more recent advance is a “short-scar” facelift in which excellent results can be obtained with fewer scars. The objective is to elevate the underlying structures and redrape the skin on the face in order to give a more youthful, healthy and rested appearance.
