Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is an advanced procedure that can restore one or both breasts after a mastectomy or lumpectomy. Breast reconstruction is a highly personal procedure that requires collaboration between patient and surgeon. At Ashpole Plastic Surgery, we’ve performed countless breast reconstruction surgeries to help women feel renewed and whole after cancer treatment. We understand the personal and emotional nature of this procedure, which is why we strive to help women feel supported and empowered throughout the entire process. If you’re curious about breast reconstruction, we encourage you to reach out to our team for a no-pressure consultation. We’ll walk you through your options to help you decide if breast reconstruction is right for you.

Understanding Breast Reconstruction Surgery

During breast reconstruction surgery, existing fat and skin are used to create a breast that looks and feels natural. If there is no tissue available, a prosthesis may be used to recreate the breast. While breast augmentation is typically used for solely cosmetic purposes, reconstructions are most commonly performed following breast cancer treatment. Reconstructions can be done when patients have undergone either a single or double mastectomy.

A Caring and Experienced Surgeon

Dr. Ashpole understands both the physical and emotional considerations involved in breast reconstruction. As a breast reconstruction expert, his goal is to help patients get back to feeling like themselves again. During your initial consultation, Dr. Ashpole will ask you questions regarding your current health and lifestyle, as well as the goals you hope to achieve with the procedure. The most important factor is to keep you healthy through the process. Dr. Ashpole believes in honesty and transparency. After a full evaluation, he will explain what options are best for you, your health, and your goals. He is realistic and won’t support any expectations that are unattainable. He will also tell you if you are not an optimal candidate for reconstructive surgery. He understands you may already be emotionally drained from your fight against cancer. You may even be afraid of hearing a new cancer diagnosis down the line. Dr. Ashpole is dedicated to giving you reliable information that will help you make an informed decision about your care.

Preparing For Breast Reconstruction

Initial Consultation

The first step in preparing for your breast reconstruction surgery involves an initial consultation with Dr. Bradley Ashpole. During this meeting, Dr. Ashpole will review your medical history, current health status, and the specific goals you have for the reconstruction. This is a crucial time to address any concerns and questions you may have about the procedure. Dr. Ashpole will also explain the different reconstruction options available and help you understand what the surgery entails, the recovery process, and the outcomes you can expect.

Choosing Implants

If your breast reconstruction involves the use of implants, you will work closely with Dr. Ashpole to choose the type that best suits your body and goals. The options typically include saline or silicone implants. Silicone implants are often favored for their natural feel, while saline implants are praised for their safety and flexibility after surgery. Dr. Ashpole will guide you through the advantages and considerations of each type to ensure that your choice aligns with your aesthetic preferences and lifestyle needs.

Pre-Surgery Considerations

Once you have decided to proceed with breast reconstruction, there are several important steps to prepare for the surgery. Dr. Ashpole will provide specific instructions based on your individual case. These may include guidelines on adjusting your current medications, recommendations for stopping smoking, and advice on managing your diet and water intake. Additionally, you will be instructed to avoid certain medications and supplements that can increase bleeding during surgery. It’s also important to arrange for someone to drive you home after the procedure and to help you during the initial recovery phase. This ensures you have the support you need for a smooth and safe recovery.

Breast Reconstruction FAQ

When can I go braless after breast reconstruction?

After breast reconstruction surgery, it’s best to wear a supportive bra for at least six weeks to aid the healing process. You can go without a bra for a few hours at a time, but it’s best to only do this on occasion.

How long does it take to feel normal after breast reconstruction?

You’ll typically start feeling like your normal self 3-4 weeks after breast reconstruction, and you can resume exercise and other strenuous activities 6-8 weeks after surgery.

Will you have feeling in your nipples after breast reconstruction?

It’s highly likely that you will not have the same level of sensitivity as you did before your mastectomy or lumpectomy. However, many patients gain some breast and nipple sensitivity back roughly a year after the surgery.

How painful is breast reconstruction surgery?

The breast reconstruction procedure itself will be performed while you’re under general anesthesia, meaning you’ll be completely asleep. However, you’ll typically experience some pain and swelling during the first couple weeks of recovery. Your doctor will provide pain medication and compression garments to help you manage discomfort.
