What is a Mastopexy?
A mastopexy, or breast lift, can be used to address breast changes due to weight loss, aging, gravity, pregnancy, and breastfeeding. While a breast lift doesn’t dramatically reduce volume, it can be combined with a breast reduction to minimize bust size. Additionally, a mastopexy can be combined with
breast augmentation to increase volume.

Breast Lift Techniques
Dr. Ashpole regularly performs a variety of breast lift procedures. During the initial consultation, he will explain the incision types in depth and determine which one is best for your needs. The recommended technique will depend on your goals, degree of droop, and breast size.
The Anchor Technique
Named for its anchor-shaped incision, this is the most common type of breast lift. It offers the most dramatic degree of lift, unlike less extensive methods. This is recommended for people with a severe degree of droop.
The anchor technique is an outpatient procedure using general anesthesia. Three incisions form the anchor shape. One is around the areola, and one is vertical from the areola to the crease. The third is horizontal along the breast crease. Dr. Ashpole uses these incisions to remove excess skin and reshape the breast.
Other Breast Lift Techniques
Less invasive techniques may be recommended for people with milder degrees of droop. They can effectively improve breast shape with fewer incisions.
The crescent lift requires only one small incision along the top of the areola. The circumareolar lift, also known as the “donut lift,” involves a circular incision around the areola. Lastly, the vertical lift uses an incision just from the areola to the breast crease.
The Recovery Process
It’s normal to experience some pain, bruising, and swelling after the procedure. Dr. Ashpole will prescribe pain medication to aid in your recovery. Most people can return to work and normal activity within 10 days. Exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for several weeks, though.

Breast Lift FAQ
How long does it take to recover from a breast lift?
After a breast lift, recovery time varies. Most people can return to normal activities in 2-3 weeks, but full recovery for strenuous tasks may take 6-8 weeks. Your medical team will provide personalized guidance for the surgery and recovery process.
How many sizes do you go down after a breast lift?
A breast lift usually leads to a decrease of about one cup size. This is mainly due to removing or repositioning extra skin and sagging breast tissue, not a decrease in volume.
Do you need to wear a special bra after a breast lift?
Yes, after breast lift surgery, it’s important to wear a supportive bra to help your breasts heal properly. Wearing a bra can reduce swelling, give your breasts support, and lessen movement and strain, which can help manage pain. Your surgeon will probably suggest wearing a surgical bra for six weeks following surgery. You should wear the bra at all times besides showering.
