How Does Botox Work?

Published by DR. Bradley Ashpole

Doctors have long relied on Botox to treat things like wrinkles and unwanted facial lines. The product itself is a brand of a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. It’s likely you’ve heard of Botox in Itasca, but do you actually understand the science behind the success? Read on to learn useful information about the procedure and recovery process.

The Procedure

Getting Botox in Itasca only takes a few minutes! Our patients often come to us with unwanted wrinkles throughout their face including on their forehead, around their eyes and around their mouth. When the solution is injected, it blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles, making the wrinkles relax and soften because they cannot contract. It’s important to note that wrinkles caused by both gravity and sun damage will not respond successfully to Botox!

Our doctors will use fine needles and inject the solution into your muscles. This sounds more painful than it actually is; you will only feel a small amount of discomfort. Give the Botox 1-2 weeks to fully set in.

How Long Does It Last?

Expect results to last anywhere from 3-6 months. It’s around this time that your lines will gradually begin to appear again. You can then decide to let wrinkles occur naturally or get another round of injections. With time and repeated injections, your muscles begin to shrink, causing fewer wrinkles overall.
